His paintings not only have artistic value enough to win the gold medal at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, but have also become valuable cultural materials that vividly convey what the life of past Japanese people is in the days before color photography.
Sadly, In 1903, he died of pneumonia in New York. He was 45 years old.
